MALAAL MOVIE REVIEW

My review of the movie is given here. It is a no spoiler review.

1. The cinematography: A big plus for the movie. Mumbai in all its finesse is captured wonderfully in the movie. Slow moving shots, landscapes and especially the song Udhal Ho, truly capture Mumbai beautifully.

2. The story: The story revolves around a guy and a girl belonging to the same colony falling in love. It is a remake of the Tamil movie 7G Rainbow Colony, which was also remade into Bengali. The girls family is going through economic changes while the guy is aimless for the most part. A typical story without much change from the original.

3. The Screenplay: The screenplay is rather stretched out at some places and too much time is wasted in establishing the characters rather than the story. As it is not a character driven film but a plot driven one, a tighter screenplay would have been better. A runtime of well over 2 hours was not required.

4. The performances: While there were multiple actors in the film, as it was mainly the debut film for the two newcomers, I will only include their performance in the review.

A) Mezaan Jaffrey: He is energetic and good looking, but his acting prowess is lacking. He could not successfully express his character and barring the ending, there really wasn’t anything notable about him. Those who have seen either the Tamil or the Bengali movie will find him to be highly disappointing. If you haven’t seen the original or the Bengali remake, he is OK. As far as the debut goes, I will put him somewhere in between Fardeen Khan and Ishan Khattar. Fardeen Khan in Prem Agan was worse than him, but Ishan Khattar in Dhadak was better than him.

B) Shamin Sehgal: To be honest, I found her performance even paper than Mezaan’s. It could be because I have seen both the Tamil and Bengali versions before, but every sentence out of her mouth seemed one note. Mezaan was a little better, perhaps because he was suave and charming, something differing from the original version. Shamin did not capture my attention for even a second. In terms of a debut, I would put her somewhere in between Katrina Kaif and Jahnvi Kapoor. Yes, Jahnvi Kapoor in Dhadak, was better than her. Katrina Kaif in Boom was not.

5. Overall review: If you have seen either the original Tamil movie or the Bengali one, do not watch it. It is hugely disappointing and will not hold your attention. For those who haven’t watched the previous two versions, it makes for a good one time watch if you go in with low expectations.
